Creating coupons will help you to attract customers and encourage them to buy your products. They can also help to improve customer loyalty and retention. Here we will provide step-by-step instructions for How to Create a Coupon Code in Magento.

1 - Access Shopping Cart Price Rules
Log into your Magento admin panel and click hover over Promotions in the navigation bar at the top. In the drop down list you will see Shopping Cart Price Rules. Click on it and it will take you to the next page.
2 - Add New Rule
Once on the page, you need to click on the ‘Add New Rule’ button in the top right hand corner. This will take you to a page where you can create the new Shopping Cart Price Rule. Give the rule a name that you will be able to recognise, e.g. ‘Christmas Discount.’
3 - Apply to Groups
Further down the form, you will see that you can choose to apply the discount to certain groups. If you want your discount to apply to all of your customer groups, hold down the shift button on your keyboard and select each group.
4 - Add the Coupon Code
Next you need to select ‘Specific Coupon’ in the coupon box. This will bring up a number of other fields that you need to complete. First up is the coupon code. This can be whatever you want it to be, but we recommend making it short and memorable, as your customers will be more likely to use it then – something like ‘CHRISTMAS14.’
5 - Settings
Once you have done this, you will be able to specify uses per coupon and uses per customer, as well the date your coupon will be active from and to.
6 - Conditions
From there, click ‘Conditions’ at the top of the bar on the left hand side of your screen. In this section you will be able to specify certain conditions for the coupon. In order to use the coupon, customers must have met the conditions that you state here. For example, you may want to create a coupon that customers can only use if they have spent over £10.00.

To add a new condition, click the plus sign and choose the relevant condition from the drop down menu. Using our example of spending over £10.00, this would be ‘subtotal.’ Next click on ‘is’ and you will be able to change it to ‘greater than’ and then click the three dots, which will turn into a box where you can enter the amount e.g. £10.00.

7 - Click Save
Once you have done this, click ‘Save Rule’ and your coupon will be ready for customers to use!
