Is Shopify the right CMS for me?
This really depends on your individual situation and your goals.
Shopify is great for smaller retail businesses who want to get their store set up quickly and cost-effectively. Shopify stores are easy to establish, easy to manage, and tend to offer a great user experience.
However, they’re not as flexible as some other eCommerce CMSs on the market and can have much higher ongoing costs than open source solutions like Magento Open Source (now a part of Adobe Commerce), Mage-Os or WooCommerce. Unlike these open source solutions, not only do you need to pay for the development support, but Shopify comes with a monthly subscription fee for the lifetime of your eCommerce business. The packages-Basic, Shopify, Advanced, and Plus-currently range from £19 to $2,300 per month (data as of 02.10.24).
The other important consideration is the additional costs for add-ons. Open source CMS platforms like WordPress and WooCommerce have thousands of highly rated free plugins available whereas many of the Shopify apps that make up your website will often come with their own ongoing costs.
This is a worthwhile tradeoff for many customers who prefer simplicity, but it’s something you need to consider carefully before diving in. It’s also worth noting that Shopify’s support and reliability are significant benefits as well — for many retail businesses, not having to manage hosting or security directly is a major plus.
