Community Edition 1.92: New security enhancements

At the beginning of the year, Magento announced that the platform had experienced a major security flaw, which could potentially allow unauthorised parties to access and take control of Magento sites, using both the Community and Enterprise editions.

Whilst Magento were quick to create a patch for the security flaw, many merchants failed to download it, leaving their sites open to hackers. We’re hoping that the majority of you will have patched your Magento sites by now but if you haven’t then make sure you download the latest version of Magento Community Edition.

The Magento Community Edition 1.92 incorporates the latest security patches SUPEE-5344 (from February 2015), SUPEE-5994 and SUPEE-6285 (from last year) into the core code, allowing merchants to improve the security of their eCommerce sites.

Whether you plan on using the latest version of Community Edition or not (we recommend that you do), it is important to ensure you have these patches installed or you will be leaving your eCommerce store very vulnerable. All patches are available to download from the Magento Community download page.

Why is it important to upgrade your Magento software?

We have already briefly pointed out one of the benefits of upgrading to the latest version of Magento Community Edition and that is its security features. Old versions of Magento are more vulnerable to hacking, so if you want to make sure your site is well protected, it is recommended that you download 1.92 as soon as possible.

Another benefit of upgrading to the latest version of Magento is that it will be optimised for better speed and performance. This will allow you to build a more robust eCommerce website that is capable of delivering an even better user experience to your customers.

Finally, upgrading to the new version of Magento Community (1.92) can help you to get rid of any bugs in your previous version. Developers tend to create these upgrades to iron out problems in the previous version, so you can benefit from even better eCommerce software.
